FAQ

When is the deadline?

The deadline for submitting a preview of your artwork is January 1st. Note that if your submission is selected by the editors, you will need to send your original vector file before December 15th.

Who are entitled to submit?

Everyone is entitled to submit.

Can I send in more than one piece?

No, you get only one chance. Choose your best piece.

How many submissions will be selected for the book?

We'll select 100 - 150 of the most creative submissions.

Do I have to use all of the Elements?

Not necessarily. If you can create something stunning by using only a few of them, that's ok too.

Can I incorporate my own graphics?

No, your artwork has to be solely constructed out of the Elements, e.g. by multiplying, overlapping, etc. Just like using your old Lego bricks!

What are the file requirements?

For submitting a preview of your artwork, you'll have to submit a 600 x 600 pixels .JPG or .GIF file at 72 DPI. If your artwork is selected, you will have to supply the original 15 x 15 cm. vector file (.AI, .PDF, .EPS). You are allowed to send in non vector images (for example, .PSD, .TIFF), but this is not encouraged. Keep in mind that your original file will have to be 15 x 15 cm. at 300 DPI minimum.

What about transparency?

You are allowed to use transparency in your artwork.

What about gradients?

The use of gradients in your art is allowed, but we advise that you use it sparsely. For example, the use of mesh gradients can be very tricky. This is because you can transform the Elements in such a way that they do not resemble their original form anymore. The most important guideline is that a viewer of your artwork should eventually be able to see that your artwork is composed out of the Elements.

Can I choose my own background colour?

Yes, you are allowed to choose your own background, even though this involves using a square. This is the only exception to the rules. Obviously, you'll have to fill the entire background with your colour.

Can the Elements be placed partly outside the canvas?

Yes.

Can you use materials like fabric or wood to re-make the shapes and then arrange them?

Vormator is a vector challenge. So the answer is no, the input and output is made of vectors.

Can I use transparency blend modes (i.e. multiply, soft light, overlay)?

Yes.

Can I use portions of the elements to build my own elements?

You can do everything you want with the pathfinder in Illustrator. Keep in mind that a viewer of your final artwork should still be able to somehow recognize the Vormator Elements.

Can I duplicate the Vormator Elements?

Yes!

NOTE

Note that this is a working list. New questions will be put here as they arrive.
